Declutter Your Home And Life

Declutter your home and life, but first you need to ask yourself one very important question.

Organization is the Achilles heel of so many rooms. The golden rule: There must be a place for everything. Imagine having just the right space for it all. Using space in the right way can bring harmony and balance to your life.

You can be organized in the smallest of places. Just take a look at these New York City Apartments, all under 600 square feet and looking very stylish.

When clutter mounts, the real issue isn’t the size of the space. It’s a person issue. This is according to the Well Blog published in The New York Times, which says clutter isn’t a house problem, but a person problem. In order for a person to adequately tackle issues with clutter, people need to change their behaviors.

Clutter can cause anxiety and stress. “Clutter bombards our minds with excessive stimuli (visual, olfactory, tactile), causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren’t necessary or important,” writes Dr. Sherrie Bourg Carter, Psy.Din Psychology Today, clutter inhibits creativity and productivity.

Your home should be your oasis, your sanctuary. A place where you love to spend time, a place to unwind. A cluttered and disorganized space will limit the flow of positive energy. A well organized and clutter free home will expand the positive space.

Positive energy brings a sense of calm and it’s important for overall good health.

Before you can even begin to declutter and organize your home and life, you need to ask yourself one very important question.

What Sparks Your Bliss?

Imagine and visualize the lifestyle of your dreams? What type of homes bring you joy? What do the living spaces look like? What is the color palette? What type of style do you love? Do you love the Minimalist style? Or do you love, Contemporary, Traditional, Retro, Rustic, Cottage, Hollywood Regency, Arts and Crafts, Industrial etc.?

Start by finding inspiration!

  • Go to your favorite websites. A few of my favorite sites include:

— Popsugar Home

— Elle Décor

— HGTV

— Houzz

— Architectural Digest

— House Beautiful

— Apartment Therapy

— Christopher Burns Interiors

  • Start pinning images of homes and living spaces that you love to Pinterest. You can share a board or create your own secret board.
  • Love magazines? Cut out images that inspire you and that you love from your favorite home decorating magazines, and create your own BLISS BOARD™ (I will share more on this in future posts).
  • Place them in a binder. (Yes, even in this tech world, binders are still very cool.) Not convinced, then…
  • Use your device to store images that you love.

It doesn’t matter where you get your inspiration or where you keep images you find. It does matter that you visualize how you want to live.

What homes and living spaces make you happy? What does the perfect home look like? What kitchens do you love? What type of bedroom do you like? Do you want it to bring you a sense of calm and a place to retreat to after a busy day? What are your favorite colors? What do you love about the closets you have a crush on? Take notice of all these images that you love and ask yourself, why do you love them? What is IT about these spaces that you adore?

After all, your home should be your oasis, not a dumping ground for things unorganized and things you don’t need. Declutter your home and life for a happier and healthier you.
